ALMA COLLEGE: Midland Chemical Society Honors Jeff Turk

Alma College issued the following announcement on June 7.

Organization presents Outstanding College Chemistry Teaching Award.

Jeffrey Turk, associate professor of chemistry at Alma College, was awarded the Outstanding College Chemistry Teaching Award by the Midland Section of the American Chemical Society at the organization’s 2019 spring banquet.

With more than 154,000 members, the American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society. The Midland Section serves students, educators and the wider community in the five counties of Midland, Bay, Saginaw, Gratiot and Isabella.

Each year at the spring banquet, the Midland Section recognizes excellence in science teaching and outstanding chemistry students (as nominated by instructors).

Turk was commended for giving engaging lectures, providing summer student research opportunities and making it possible for students to work as teaching assistants and attend ACS conferences.

“The best moment of the awards reception was when my graduated research student, Christine Cuthbertson, who is wrapping up her Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, came to the reception and presented the award to me on behalf of the reception organizers,” says Turk.

Turk teaches introductory and advanced organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and flavor and fragrance chemistry. He joined the Alma faculty in 2006.
